The Pharmacy First service was launched on 31st January 2024. It allows local pharmacies to offer specific services directly to patients, without the patient needing to visit their General Practice (GP). Alongside this service, also includes expansions to blood pressure checks and contraception services. This new line of pharmacy services can free up to 10 million doctor appointments every year and make it easier and faster for patients to get the care and medication they need, for minor illnesses and mild conditions.  launched on 31st January 2024.

Pharmacies can now offer advice and prescribe medication for the following conditions:

  1. Impetigo – people aged 1 year & older.
  2. Infected insect bite – people aged 1 year & older.
  3. Sore throat – people aged 5 years & older.
  4. Sinusitis – people aged 12 years & older.
  5. Shingles – people aged 18 years & older.
  6. Acute otitis media – people aged 1 to 17 years.
  7. Uncomplicated urinary tract infections – women aged 16 to 64 years.

Additionally, pharmacies are now able to prescribe certain medications including antibiotics and contraceptive pills. Patients will also be able to self-refer for certain needs, such as booking in for NHS physiotherapy or podiatry without having to ask their family doctor first.
